All month long: Adopt a Senior Pet Month

Pledge to help senior pets this month by telling others why seniors make such great pets. Here are just a few reasons:
- You’ll know what you’re getting. When you adopt a senior pet, he’s already full-grown and you’ll be able to tell what his grooming requirements will be and what kind of temperament he has.
- Age is really just a number. A senior cat can give you just as much love and compassion (and entertainment) as a kitten. And a senior cat will probably be a lot more calm and relaxed, too.
- You’ll help save a life. Adult pets are often passed over for younger animals. If you adopt a senior, you’ll be giving her a second chance at a happy and healthy life.
- Some shelters offer discounted adoption fees for older pets during Adopt a Senior Pet Month. Call or visit your local shelter to see what promotions it might have.

Don’t miss the Brooklyn Museum’s exhibit “Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt.” It’s the first major exhibition on the topic of mummies. You’ll see 30 animal mummies — cats (of course), birds, reptiles, snakes, rodents and dogs — as well as more than 60 objects relating to the Egyptian ritual. The exhibition runs through Jan. 21, 2018. For more information, go to brooklynmuseum.org.
Sunday, Nov. 5 to Saturday, Nov. 11: Animal Shelter Appreciation Week
Every year, the Humane Society of the United States celebrates National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week during the first full week of November. It’s a way to honor shelters and the dedicated people who work so hard to protect animals. I volunteer at my local shelter and am always amazed at the hard work they do — whether they’re taking care of a sick animal or helping a potential adopter find the right pet.
Here are just a few ways you can get involved:
- Adopt your next pet from a shelter.
- Volunteer to help shelter animals. I’m a foster caretaker and a cat socializer. It’s truly a rewarding experience.
- Donate supplies. Shelters often need simple things like towels, blankets and toys. Most shelters have wish lists on their websites.
Tuesday, Nov. 7: Not a Creature Was Purring

Take a little break from the holiday madness to read the fifth book in the Paws and Claws Mystery series from author Krista Davis, which comes out today. Holly Miller helps run the family pet-friendly hotel, but her side business is solving mysteries with her cat Twinkletoes and dog Trixie. When a pet clothing tycoon turns up dead, Holly and friends come to the rescue. The book is $7.99 and is published by Berkley Publishing.
Friday, Nov. 17: Macy’s Holiday Windows

Looking for a new holiday tradition? Starting today through the end of 2017, Macy’s in San Francisco will again be home to Holiday Windows, where the San Francisco SPCA highlights different adoptable cats and dogs in beautifully decorated store window fronts. Last year, the SF SPCA adopted out more than more than 800 animals over the course of Holiday Windows 2016. Go to holiday.sfspca.org for more information.
Saturday, Nov. 18 to Sunday, Nov. 19: Don’t Miss the CFA Show!

Join thousands of cat lovers and more than 800 cats in Portland, Oregon, for the 2017 CFA International Cat Show, presented by Royal Canin. The Portland Expo Center will be home to the biggest stage in cat competition, with a portion of the show’s proceeds benefiting the nonprofit shelter Cat Adoption Team. The event takes place Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It costs $10 for adults, $25 for a family pack of four, and children under the age of 5 get in for free. To look forward to in December: Saturday, December 9: The NY Cat Film Festival
The “sister” event to the 3rd Annual NY Dog Film Festival debuts today. Both festivals have two completely different 75-minute programs celebrating the species they’re named for. Head to catfilmfestival.com for more information.
