As with us humans, there are some things kitty should just avoid. Not every animal reacts the same way to certain food items, but it’s always better to be safe.

All month: “Steinlen: Cats” at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

If you’re a cat (and art) lover, don’t miss the final days of the feline-themed exhibit “Steinlen: Cats” at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. (The exhibit started in November 2017.) Known to cat lovers as the artist behind 1896 cabaret advertisement La Tournée du Chat Noir, artist Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen created many fine-art prints along with illustrations for journals, song sheets, books, advertisements and even restaurant menus. You’ll see 32 of his works, focusing on images of cats in a range of styles, such as Realism, Art Nouveau, Post-Impressionism and Japonisme. Get more details at vmfa.museum.
Friday, March 2 to Sunday, March 4: Come to The Evangeline Cat Fanciers Show!
If you’re in the Houston, Texas, area, The Evangeline County Cat Fanciers show is in town. Its mission: to stage, reward and celebrate our feline companions. The show will be held at the Houston Marriott North Hotel, where you’ll see more than 200 cats and exhibitors from all over the world. The show is in association with The International Cat Association (TICA), which currently recognizes 71 cat breeds. You’ll get a chance to meet favorites like the Persian, British Shorthair and Maine Coon, as well as more exotic and rare breeds like the Bengal, Lykoi and Sphynx. Sunday, March 4: Painting for a Good Cause

Pick up your paintbrush for a good cause: The Feline Foundation of Greater Washington. Paint your pet in this three-hour custom painting class held at Painting With a Twist in Ashburn, Virginia. You can paint one pet per canvas — just send in a photo of your pet ahead of time, and artists will pre-sketch the canvas. Saturday, March 24: Save the Kittens With the Kitten Lady

Give back to kittens by taking part in a fun, two-hour interactive Saving Kittens Workshop on kitten care and advocacy. Taught by our favorite Kitten Lady, Hannah Shaw, the workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in Norman, Oklahoma, and sponsored by Hands Helping Paws. Go to kittenlady.org for registration details.
